Comprehensive Answers
I’ve compiled a list of the most frequent questions that I have received over my career. It’s normal and encourage clients to ask many questions when choosing to work with a licensed Mental Health Provider. Here are some answers to the questions I receive the most. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please get in touch.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth is being able to meet with your clinician via audio and video over the internet using any of the following devices: desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. Just like a face-to-face appointment, your telehealth visit will be private and confidential. None of our appointments are recorded or stored.
What equipment do I need?
To participate in Telehealth appointments from your home, you will need one of the following devices:
Desktop computer with a webcam, speakers, a 2.5 GHz processor, and 4 GB of RAM
Laptop computer with built-in webcam and speakers, a 2.5 GHz processor, and 4 GB of RAM
Tablet device with built-in webcam and speakers,
Smartphonewith
at least iOS 11 or Android 7.0
(Note: To use a smartphone, you must first download Telehealth by SimplePractic- available for iOS or Android in the app store.)
You will also need an internet connection that is at least 10mbps.
For optimal results, a reliable, high-speed internet connection with a bandwidth of at least 10 mbps will minimize connection issues and provide the best quality.
What can I do to improve the quality of the connection?
If you live in an area with slow internet, this can really affect the speed of your connection. Here are some basic steps that can improve the overall quality:
Use wired Ethernet instead of wifi whenever possible. Wifi will work, but you may experience a lag and interference, which can make your video and audio choppy. If you experience a lag or interference while using Wifi, we recommend moving closer to your router. However, wired internet will give you a much smoother, more consistent experience.
Test your internet connection speed.
Google provides an easy way to test your internet connection directly from the google homepage. Simply search:
internet speed test Click the blue button that says Run Speed Test.
If it is under 10mbps and you’re using wifi, try using a wired internet connection or restarting your router.
Close other programs. If you have several programs running in the background, closing them will almost certainly improve the quality. Also, make sure you’re not downloading any large files.
If you are unable to connect, please contact me as soon as possible to see if I can help you troubleshoot.
How can I check telehealth Insurance coverage?
1. Call the number on the back of your insurance ID card2. You will reach an electronic prompt; follow Member Services and Check Coverage. Instructions will vary depending on the insurance company3. Before you can ask the representative any questions, be ready to recite your full insurance ID (the most prominent number on the card) and your full name, date of birth, and home address of the policy holder. NOTE: If you’re calling for someone else, you’ll need to verify their demographics as well as yours. If the individual is over 18, they will need to authorize your access to their health information ahead of time. If you’re calling for a minor, some insurance companies will only give info to the policy holder.4. After verifying your identity, confirm your network status and coverage of services provided through telehealth. Specify the service code(s): will be through a secure video platform.5. Before the end of the call, make sure to write down all information you were given, and ask for the representative’s name and reference number.
How long does each therapy session take?
Typically, the intake session, which is our initial session is scheduled for 50-60 minutes, on-going individual sessions are 45-50 minutes.
What therapeutic approach do you take in treatment?
I strongly believe that you should feel comfortable with the therapist you choose and hopeful about the therapy experience. When you feel this way, therapy is more likely to be most helpful to you. Let me describe how I see therapy.
My theoretical approach is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This approach tends to be a practical, goal-oriented, short term model of treatment. Its primary focus is on changing the way you think, feel, and behave.
The most central idea of my work is to assist you in creating a healthier mindset, as ultimately the way you think leads to the way you feel and behave. One way that I accomplish this is by taking an educational approach. What I mean, is that I will teach you and equip you with the tools and skills you need so you can continue your growth journey even after we end treatment.
In regards to note taking during session, I try to keep that to a minimum except for the intake session, our very first session. I usually take notes during our intake session, as there is a lot to cover and I want to make sure I get everything down accurate. You may find it useful to take your own notes, to remember important points or the steps you plan to take.
By the end of our first or second session, I will tell you how I see your case at this point and how I think we should proceed. I view therapy as a partnership between us. You define the problem areas to be worked on; I use my specialized knowledge to help you make the changes you want to make. Therapy is not like visiting a medical doctor for a shot. It requires your very active involvement. It requires your best efforts to change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. For example, I will expect you to tell me about important experiences, what they meant to you, and what strong feelings were involved. This is one of the ways you are an active participant in your therapy session.
I expect us to plan our work together. In our treatment plan, we will list the areas to work on, our goals, the methods we will use, the time and money commitments we will make, and some other things. I expect us to agree on a plan that we will both work hard to follow. From time to time, we will look together at our progress and goals. If we think we need to, we can then change our treatment plan, its goals, or its methods.
An important part of your therapy experience will be practicing new skills that you will learn in our sessions. I will ask you to practice outside our meetings, and we will work together to set up homework assignments for you. I might ask you to do exercises, keep records, and read to deepen your understanding. You will probably have to work on relationships in your life and make long-term efforts to get the best results. These are important parts of personal change. Change will sometimes be easy and quick, but more often it will be slow and difficult and will need repetitions, and so you will need to keep trying. There are no miracle cures. I cannot promise that your behavior or circumstance will change. I can promise to support you and do my very best to understand you and repeating patterns, as well as to help you clarify what it is that you want for yourself.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
Effective January 1, 2022, a ruling went into effect called the "No Surprises Act" which requires practitioners to provide a "Good Faith Estimate" (GFE) to individuals who are uninsured or utilize self-pay.
You have the right to receive a GFE explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.
You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a GFE before you schedule a service.
Note: GFE do not currently apply to any individuals who are using insurance benefits, including "out of network benefits” (i.e.., submitting superbills to insurance for reimbursement).
Timeline requirements: Providers are required to provide a GFE of expected charges for a scheduled or requested service, including items or services that are reasonably expected to be provided in conjunction with such scheduled or requested item or service. That estimate must be provided within specified timeframes:
If the service is scheduled at least 3 business days before the appointment date: no later than 1 business day after the date of scheduling;
If the service is scheduled at least 10 business days before the appointment date: no later than 3 business days after the date of scheduling; or
If the uninsured or self-pay individual requests a GFE (without scheduling the service), no later than 3 business days after the date of the request. A new GFE must be provided, within the specified timeframes if the individual reschedules the requested item or service.
Social Media
Friending. I do not accept friend or contact requests from current or former clients on any social networking site (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). I believe that adding clients as friends or contacts on these sites can compromise your confidentiality and our respective privacy. It may also blur the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship. If you have questions about this, please bring them up when we meet and we can talk more about it.
Interacting. Please do not use SMS (mobile phone text messaging) or messaging on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn to contact me. These sites are not secure, and I may not read these messages in a timely fashion.
Do not use Wall postings, @replies, or other means of engaging with me in public online if we have an already established client/therapist relationship. Engaging with me this way could compromise your confidentiality. It may also create the possibility that these exchanges become a part of your legal medical record and will need to be documented and archived in your chart.
If you need to contact me between sessions, the best way to do so is by phone
